Meta Glasses Explained: What Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 Can—and Cannot—Do

What exactly are Meta glasses?

‘Meta glasses’ now describes several related products, so names matter. Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 is the mainstream camera-and-audio model sold in India. It keeps the familiar Wayfarer, Skyler and Headliner shapes while adding connected hardware inside the temples and frame.

Meta Ray-Ban Display sits further ahead in the range. It adds a small full-colour display to one lens and works with Meta Neural Band, an EMG wristband that translates subtle muscle signals into controls. It should not be confused with the standard Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 covered here, and availability varies by market.

Camera and first-person video

A 12MP ultra-wide camera sits in the frame and captures the wearer’s point of view. Gen 2 upgrades video to 3K Ultra HD with ultrawide HDR; Meta says it can record at up to 60 frames per second. This is useful for travel moments, family scenes, demonstrations and short creator clips when holding a phone would interrupt the action.

The perspective is also a limitation. Framing follows the direction of your head, not exactly the movement of your eyes, so important recordings still need practice. The tiny camera cannot replace a mirrorless camera, action camera or phone with optical zoom for controlled professional work.

Audio, calls and everyday controls

Open-ear speakers direct audio towards you without sealing the ear canal. That makes music, podcasts, calls and spoken AI answers easier to hear while remaining aware of nearby traffic or people. Microphones support calls and voice commands, while the temple touchpad handles volume and playback.

Open-ear audio is convenient rather than private. People close to you may hear some sound at higher volume, and loud streets can reduce clarity. For focused listening, flights or confidential calls, normal headphones remain the better tool.

What Meta AI adds

Meta AI turns the glasses into a voice-first assistant. You can ask general questions, control capture and media, handle supported calls or messages, request translations, or ask about something in front of you. Meta’s India launch also highlighted full Hindi interaction and Conversation Focus, which is designed to make nearby voices easier to hear in noisy places.

AI answers are not guaranteed to be correct. Visual recognition can misunderstand an object or context, and availability can depend on country, language, account and software rollout. Never rely on the glasses alone for medical, legal, financial, navigation or safety-critical decisions.

Meta also announced experiments such as UPI Lite payments through a WhatsApp-linked bank account. A feature described as testing or coming later should not influence a purchase until it is visibly available and supported for your account in India.

Battery, charging and setup

Meta rates Gen 2 for up to eight hours of typical use. It also says the glasses can reach 50% charge in about 20 minutes and that the charging case supplies up to 48 additional hours. Real endurance changes with video capture, calls, music volume, AI use, temperature and connectivity.

Setup requires a compatible smartphone, wireless internet, Bluetooth, a Meta account and the Meta AI app. Ray-Ban’s support information lists Android 10 or later, or iOS 14.4 or later, as the minimum phone software. A USB-C power adapter is not necessarily included, so check the box contents before travel.

The glasses and case use built-in rechargeable batteries that are not user-replaceable. Ray-Ban’s support information also says there is no ‘find my glasses’ feature, which makes an ordinary protective routine important.

Privacy is part of the product decision

An outward-facing capture LED signals when the glasses take photos, videos or livestreams intended for the gallery. Ray-Ban’s current FAQ notes an important nuance: on newer models, some visual AI requests may use the camera without lighting that LED because the image is being processed for the requested AI feature rather than saved as shareable media.

That technical distinction does not replace social permission. Avoid recording in private spaces, explain the glasses when people may be uncomfortable, follow venue rules and ask before capturing children, colleagues or strangers at close range. Voice controls can be switched off, and privacy settings should be reviewed in the Meta AI app.

Cloud processing may be involved when the glasses answer questions about what you see. Review Meta’s current privacy controls and data-use explanations rather than assuming every interaction stays only on the device.

India price, lenses and buying checks

Meta announced a starting India price of ₹39,900 for Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 in December 2025. Different frames, sun lenses, polarisation, Transitions options and prescription requirements can raise the price. Prices and availability change, so use that figure as launch context rather than a permanent quotation.

Prescription support in India may depend on certified optical retailers. Before paying, confirm your prescription range, lens warranty, return conditions, app compatibility, frame fit and whether the exact colour and lens combination is an official India unit.

Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 makes sense for travellers, parents, creators and professionals who value quick first-person capture, open-ear listening and short voice interactions. It is especially appealing when normal-looking eyewear matters more than a visibly technical headset.

Skip it if you need an in-lens display, private audio, all-day heavy recording, professional camera control, guaranteed offline AI or a device that can replace your phone. It is also a poor fit if you are uncomfortable with Meta’s account and cloud ecosystem.

For many buyers, Gen 1 may remain enough if found through an authorised retailer at a meaningful discount. Gen 2 earns its higher price mainly through longer battery life, stronger video capture and newer software support—not a completely different way of wearing smart glasses.
